"It's Memorial Day!"

For many people today is a day for barbecues, water games, and enjoying the day off. 😎

For some people, today may be sentimental or saddening - maybe for the fallen or wounded soldiers or domestic heroes dear to your heart. 💔

Many of us find ourselves somewhere in the middle of it all. 😎🍻💔🙌

Wherever you find your heart this morning, a quote from former Navy SEAL Officer, Jocko Willink comes to mind, “Live a life that honors the sacrifice of our fallen heroes."

When first reading that you might feel the way I did...

Oh God, am I living a life big enough to honor that sacrifice? Am I working hard enough, am I doing enough for social change, am I enjoying my freedoms enough?!'

But then I remembered something else…

Several years ago I went on a tour of San Quentin State Prison, and we talked with some of the prisoners. We asked them what they missed the most. They all echoed the same sentiment – they missed the little things...

Sunday barbecues with their families, watching a sunset, diving into a body of water…

As I recalled their words I realized that these were the same things our soldiers, officers, and other domestic heroes have sacrificed as well.

I think to honor that sacrifice doesn’t necessarily mean to mourn the loss of life, or to do something grand with our own lives, but to mindfully enjoy the little things...

The lazy Sunday mornings, the feeling of sunshine on your skin, the safety of your home, the sound of children laughing, the comfort of a hug, running water, good food, and the ability to dream about the future…

On this Memorial Day, and every day, I encourage you to remember to honor life by appreciating the little things. To see the sacred in the mundane. To express gratitude in the moments of joy, relaxation, simplicity, and normalcy.

And remember what a gift it all is…

Wishing you a wonderful week.

With love and gratitude,

Robin
